Abstract

This essay examines the ontological status of the cinematic object, arguing that film does not simply record things but actively constructs them through framing, montage, and spectatorial perception. Drawing on phenomenology, montage theory, and Antonio Costa’s reflections on film objects, it proposes that the cinematic object exists as a visual and symbolic configuration shaped by the interplay of gaze and imagination. Through analyses of Last Year at Marienbad (Alain Resnais, 1961) and Zabriskie Point (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1970), the article shows how objects function as epistemic and affective operators, destabilizing reality and revealing cinema as an art that produces, rather than reproduces, the visible world.
