Abstract

In the classical religious experience, the epiphany plays a decisive role, conveying divine revelation. The aspiration to overcome the limits imposed on the human condition is pressing and expressed in some epiphanic typologies that allow a direct relationship with the gods through sight and other bodily senses, such as hearing and smell. The Ancients’ need to re-establish contact with the divine is ritualized, according to illustrious models. This vocation is not extraneous to the Muslim tradition, although it takes on the nuances destined to connote an aniconic ritual dimension. The methodological background of this contribution is mainly placed under the aegis of Performance Studies.
