Gossip, rumor and slander are ‘primary discourse genres’ (Bakhtin) characterized by a diegetic structure, a hybrid ontology and a powerful performative value. They are short stories with a particularly strong impact on the transformation of people’s lives and identities. Between the innocent chatter and the murderous slander, we see a colorful spectrum of socially marked speech acts, constitutively suspended between the public and the private domain, psychologically contagious, and narratively marked by different degrees of fictionality. Tracing the transformation from ‘primary’ into ‘secondary discourse genres’, my paper examines and compares some examples of dramatic and narrative representation of gossip, rumor and slander as plotswitching devices, considering their effects on the characters’ evolution.Descargas
