Abstract

This essay aims to investigate the contribution of «Nord e Sud» to the post-war debate on education. «Nord e Sud» took on a rather unusual role in the Italian publishing scene, picking up the legacy of classic southern Italian nationalism, as championed by Fortunato and, to some extent, Salvemini. Its pages contain interesting descriptions of local schools, but also reports on educational problems, from abandoned children to the issue of school buildings, as well as studies on popular education. The solid combination of southern Italian regionalism, meticulous analysis of the suburbs and the concept of school as a driver of social redemption makes «Nord e Sud» one of the leading voices alongside the Catholic/Communist debate.
