This article is based on an attempt to analyse the aspects of primary education in Barbagia Mandrolisai from the Unity to the Giolitti era. The study is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the historical period through a reconstruction of the situation in the Italian kingdom from the Casati law to the Daneo Credaro law, which deliberated the passage of elementary education from the municipalities to the State. The second part analyses historiography and archive documents between the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing mostly on some areas of Barbagia Mandrolisai. The core of the research is the study of documents and textbooks dated from 1861 to 1914, preserved in the municipalities' archives and ex-primary schools in Tonara, Sorgono, Desulo. The inadequacy of the archive system and the absence of a person in charge of the management of the archives, in addition to the enormous fragmentation of the papers, chronologically and typologically, made the access to the resources difficult, although not impossible.
