The essay shows how woman primary school teachers, despite the difficulties they encountered in their professional activity, both because
of the lack of social consideration and the meagre resources allocated by the municipalities to popular education, took part in the general process of literacy in the country in the first forty years after the unification of Italy. The essay also analyses how the young women who went into higher education to become teachers related the issues of female emancipationism to their demands for the vote and equal pay levels with their male colleagues. In addition, the essay explores, in the historical period between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the membership of the vanguard of women primary school teachers in the first workers’ unions and in the socialist movement. These teachers were also socially and humanitarianly committed to extracurricular educational activities that improved the conditions of children and young people.
