Il saggio esamina gli scritti critici in cui Ursula Le Guin cita opere, personaggi e stile di Tolkien. Quindi le sue riprese tolkieniane: mappe di corredo ai romanzi, genealogie mitiche e storiche del proprio universo immaginario. Confronta Earthsea e Il Signore degli Anelli su elementi comuni: la magia, specie in relazione alla parola, la presenza dei draghi. The essay examines the critical writings in which Ursula Le Guin refers to Tolkien’s works, characters, and style. It then explores her Tolkien-inspired borrowings: maps accompanying the novels, mythical and historical genealogies of her own imaginary universe. It compares Earthsea and The Lord of the Rings through common elements: magic, especially in relation to language, and the presence of dragons. It also considers the innovations she introduced into fantasy concerning the role of women.
