About the Journal
Focus and Scope
The Atti della Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti – Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali is one of the publications issued periodically by the Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti, a scientific society officially formed in Messina in 1729 with the authorization of the then Viceroy of Sicily [URL]. The Academy was called Peloritana after the name (Cape Peloro) of the tip of the island in which the city of Messina is situated and dei Pericolanti because, in the words (see the original Italian version below) of Abbot Carlo Vitali, the first permanent secretary of the society:
As in the sea between Scylla and Charybdis the helmsman is ever in danger,
yet he will be thought shrewd and sagacious,
if, keeping his ship on a straight course between the two,
avoiding the rocks on the one side and the maelstrom on the other,
he brings his ship safely to harbour:
So in learning, the scholar is tossed between difficulties and adversities;
but he will be worthy of praise and glory,
if, directing his mind and proper reason around them,
likewise avoiding any impediment or contention,
he penetrates without hindrance into the Truth he seeks.
A ship at the mercy of the waves, passing with sails unfurled between Scylla and Charybdis, appears in the coat of arms of the Academy, which also bears the Latin motto “Inter Utramque Viam Periclitantes”.[†]
This journal is of a multi- and inter-disciplinary nature and covers a broad range of fields including mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, and their intersection. History of science is also included within the topics addressed by the journal. The transactions of the Pelorian Academy started out as periodic news sheets containing the notes presented by the members of the Divisions into which the Academy has been and still is organized, according to subject areas. The publication of these notes for the Division (“Classe”) of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences is the responsibility of the Editorial Committee, which is composed of the Director of the division with the role of Chairman, the Vice-Director, the Secretary and two or more other members. Besides original research articles, the journal also accepts texts from conferences and invited talks held in the Academy. These contributions are published in a different section of the journal. In addition to the regular issues, single monographic supplements are occasionally published which assemble reports and communications presented at congresses, symposia, seminars, study meetings and other scientific events organized by the Academy or under its patronage. Since 2004 these transactions have been published online in the form of an open access electronic journal.
Peer Review Process
Manuscripts submitted for publication on this journal as original research articles are ordinarily peer-reviewed by at least two referees. Authors are invited to suggest a list of scientists qualified to act as reviewers, although the Editorial Committee will not necessarily approach them. The review process of papers submitted as contributions to special issues or supplements (including conference proceedings) is handled and supervised by the Guest Editors of the issue who are delegated the responsibility of accepting or rejecting the submissions received for that issue. Manuscripts submitted for publication in the section "Lectures and Colloquia" are ordinarily appraised by the Editorial Committee.
Publication Frequency
The journal ordinarily publishes one volume of two issues per year, aside from supplements. Once an issue is open, accepted articles are published as soon as they are ready.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Journal History
Atti della Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti - Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali is a serial publication issued by Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti (APP), a scientific society formed at Messina (Italy) in 1729. The current APP transactions started out as periodic news sheets containing the notes and reports presented by the members of the divisions (Classi) into which the Academy has been and still is organized, according to subject areas. The more recent historical thread of the present publication can be traced back to Atti della Reale Accademia Peloritana (ISSN 0365-592X), regularly published with annual frequency since 1878. In 1936 this latter publication split into five sections, one of which was Atti della Reale Accademia Peloritana - Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Biologiche (ISSN 0365-5520). Then, in 1943 the Division of Physical, Mathematical and Biological Sciences was separated into two autonomous divisions: “Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences” and “Medical and Biological Sciences”. Correspondingly, two new publications stemmed from the former one, one of which was Atti della Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti - Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali, whose printed version (ISSN 0365-0359) has been replaced by the current online version (ISSN 1825-1242) in 2005.
Contents of Volumes XXXVIII - LXXX (1935 - 2002), originally published in print edition, have been digitized and are currently available online at the institutional repository of the University of Messina: http://cab.unime.it/mus/view/subjects/CLSFMN.htm.
