Abstract

The article, through a critical reflection on the assumption of similarity, according to which all the human beings are fundamentally equal (the so-called “Golden Rule”), aims at consolidating the assumption of diversity as basis for intercultural communication. To this purpose, it briefly analyzes Milton J. Bennett’s model for the development of the empathy (the so-called “Platinum Rule”). In multicultural societies, in order to make communication among subjects belonging to different cultures effective, it is necessary to overcome the “Golden Rule” and the unilateral dimension on which it is founded, and to prefer communicative patterns founded on the assumption of diversity, which uses empathy as a communication strategy.
