Abstract

In the context of growing educational inequalities, the concept of “frontier” takes on an educational value as a space where inclusion and exclusion are negotiated. Place attachment, the emotional bond with places, can act as a protective factor for students from a migrant background in marginal contexts. The article analyses this construct starting from a scoping review and some considerations emerging from an experience of redevelopment of school spaces in a peripheral neighbourhood of Milan. The results emphasise the impact of the quality of educational spaces on the sense of belonging and the prevention of early school leaving. Suburbs’ schools therefore emerge as laboratories for transformative practices and intercultural citizenship.
