Abstract

The Civic Museum of Messina was founded in 1806 on the initiative of the young intellectual Carmelo la Farina, finding an appropriate site only after 1890, when it was decided to move it to the monastery of San Gregorio. It was in this location, where it remained until the earthquake of 1908, that the museum acquired a more decisive character as an art collection, above all through a widespread recovery of the heritage of suppressed ecclesiastical organizations. The paper, by retracing the path of some emblematic paintings, adds some significant pieces to the knowledge of Messina’s artistic heritage.
