Abstract

Libraries connected to museum institutions are not libraries in themselves, but rather they become a support tool for collections. The first Library of a Sicilian Museum is the Library of the Jesuit Fathers in the College of Palermo, already established for almost two centuries and even the subject of carefully printed cataloguing in 1682, which becomes ex-post a cognitive, educational and in-depth tool for the collections of the nascent Museum. The library is then put at the service of the Museum for the first time: a combination is created, an innovative and modern complementarity, which has not had adequate prominence in the specialist literature until present day. Today, in an era in which even the book heritage can be returned to the public in a new way, the digital one, we hope that a great deal of knowledge will be made accessible to the community as soon as possible, to that multiple and widespread community which, today, is sitting behind a screen and has a new and increasingly compelling and inalienable right: the right to digital accessibility of cultural heritage.
