CALL FOR PAPERS

In a contemporary world shaped, at every spatial scale, by mobility, cultural plurality, and the ongoing transformation of territories, educational spaces can be approached as the products of layered historical processes in which pedagogical traditions, cultural practices, and changing relationships with place intersect.

Schools, families, and educational institutions are historically situated actors. They are embedded in narratives, representations of territories, and processes of knowledge production that have evolved over time and continue to shape educational experiences.

Space is a central dimension of education. As a category of analysis and as a field of experience, it is crucial to the development of critical thinking and to the understanding of contemporary complexity. Situated at the intersection of material and symbolic geographies, spatial inquiry offers an essential range of concepts, methods, tools, and analytical perspectives for educational research.

For Volume XVIII/2026, Quaderni di Intercultura invites scholars to submit contributions to a special issue exploring the relationships between educational worlds and geographical worlds. The issue will place particular emphasis on historical research in education, its sources and methodologies, and its intersections with geography and intercultural studies. Contributions drawing on research in children’s and young adult literature are also especially welcome.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Historical developments in the relationship between education and cultural and social geographies;
  • Educational institutions and the long-term transformation of territories;
  • Educational spaces as sites in the historical construction of interculturality and inclusion;
  • Representations of territories and landscapes in educational materials and historical pedagogical discourses;
  • Geographical narratives in the history of children’s and young adult literature;
  • Teaching practices at the intersection of education and geography;
  • Atlases, maps, school cartographies, and narrative devices as sources for the history of education;
  • Archival, printed, and iconographic sources for the study of education and territory;
  • Geographies of spatial perception and children’s geographies;
  • The distinctive status of Geography teaching in upper secondary education.
