Ascesa e caduta della pirateria nelle Bahamas nel XVIII secolo

All’inizio del XVIII secolo, la pirateria assume una connotazione significativa nella politica perseguita dalle monarchie europee nelle colonie americane: in questo contesto si collocano le vicende delle Bahamas e, nello specifico, di New Providence, le cui difficoltà amministrative si sovrappongono alle vicende militari del tempo. Sviluppati in una prospettiva di Longue durée, l’avvicendamento conflittuale creatosi nelle dinamiche giuridiche, istituzionali e sociali dell’isola, comporta la sua traslazione da florido insediamento commerciale a epicentro di criminalità e sovversione, divenendo un fattore destabilizzante gli interessi del Regno di Gran Bretagna[1] e mettendo a rischio la stabilità dei fondamenti del suo espansionismo commerciale nel Nuovo Mondo.
