This contribution, starting from the definition of a typical sports model for the «Latin» European area, intends to reflect on the figure of the gymnastics teacher in Italy in the Liberal Age. By reading the statistical data concerning the teachers of this discipline in service in the school year 1885/1886, kept in the Central State Archives, the author intends to contribute to the formation of a paradigm capable of delineating the peculiarities of this professional. Furthermore, the research aims to reconstruct a historical model of the Italian gymnastic teacher through a comparative perspective with the contemporary experiences developed in the other states – France, Spain, and Portugal – included in the Latin area.
