The aim of this paper is to describe the training of teachers in the Stelline
orphanage in Milan between the Unification and the Giolittian period.
Starting from regulations, statutes and some school reports in the archives,
the aim will be to understand how the laws on the training of school staff, of
the newborn Italian State, influenced and interested the staff in charge of the education and training of orphans. Already in the 16th century, the institute was a place of charity and hospitality, heir to the tradition of Carlo Borromeo; in the 19th century it also became a place of training and education for orphans and orphan girls. The documents will be interpreted in the light of a twofold key: on the one hand, the orphanage as a society of control, through discipline, and on the other, a place of social redemption. This is because, precisely at the time of the second industrial revolution, there was a break with the past, which led the administrators of the pious places to review the educational system and, consequently, also the training of the school staff they employed.
