About the Journal
Aim and Scope
Gli Argonauti is an open-access, peer-reviewed electronic journal that publishes scholarly contributions on topics in the fields of the history of education and pedagogy.
The journal was established on the initiative of the Chair of History of Education at the University of Messina.
The research articles, scholarly studies, and critical essays published by the journal primarily address the history of schooling, educational institutions, and educational practices, as well as the historical development of pedagogical thought and educational research in the modern and contemporary periods. Particular attention is devoted to Southern Italy, border regions, and peripheral areas, also from a comparative perspective.
The journal also welcomes interdisciplinary studies developed sub specie educationis, examining cultural and educational processes and the relationship between education and economic development, with particular attention to their socio-cultural context and local dimension. In addition, Gli Argonauti publishes contributions devoted to the history of children’s literature.
Journal Sections
Gli Argonauti is divided into five sections:
- Monographic Section, devoted to a specific theme explored through contributions selected following a Call for Papers.
- Studies and Research, which publishes manuscripts independently submitted by scholars.
- Conference Proceedings, including the proceedings and documentation of seminars, study days, and national and international conferences.
- Junior Section, dedicated to contributions by PhD holders, doctoral candidates, graduates, and independent scholars working on topics within the journal’s scope, including from a Public History perspective.
- News and Reviews, featuring debates, reports, interviews, book reviews, bibliographical notices, and information on events focusing on the history of education and pedagogy.
Publication Frequency
Gli Argonauti is published annually.
Ethical Standards
The journal adheres to the ethical principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in its Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
Languages
Gli Argonauti accepts manuscripts written in Italian, English, French, Spanish, and German.

Peer Review Process
All submitted manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review process.
Open Access Policy
Gli Argonauti provides immediate, free, and unrestricted open access to all published content, thereby promoting the dissemination and exchange of scholarly knowledge.
The journal does not charge any fees for manuscript submission, editorial processing, or article publication.

Gli Argonauti is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
All parties involved in the publication process-including authors, editors, editorial staff, and reviewers-are expected to be familiar with and comply with the following ethical standards.
Duties of the Editors
Publication Decisions
The Editor-in-Chief, Editors, and Editorial Board of Gli Argonauti are responsible for deciding whether submitted manuscripts should be accepted for publication.
Fairness
Editors, editorial staff, and reviewers evaluate submitted manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their scholarly merit, without discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, or political beliefs of the authors.
Confidentiality
The Editor-in-Chief, Editors, and Editorial Board undertake not to disclose any information concerning submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, and, where appropriate, the publisher.
Conflicts of Interest and Disclosure
Editors and editorial staff shall not use unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research without the author’s explicit written consent.
Duties of the Reviewers
Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and, through constructive feedback, helps authors improve the quality of their manuscripts.
Timeliness
Any reviewer who feels unqualified to evaluate a manuscript or knows that a prompt review will not be possible should promptly notify the editorial office and decline the invitation to review.
Confidentiality
All manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be discussed with or disclosed to third parties without the explicit authorization of the editors.
Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively and professionally. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly and support their evaluations with appropriate arguments.
Acknowledgement of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published works that have not been cited by the author. They should also notify the editors of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under review and any other work of which they are aware.
Conflicts of Interest and Disclosure
Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal advantage. Reviewers should decline to review manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest arising from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with the authors or their affiliated institutions.
Duties of the Authors
Reporting Standards
Authors of original research articles should present an accurate account of the work performed and an objective discussion of its significance. The underlying data should be represented accurately in the manuscript. The paper should contain sufficient detail and references to enable others to replicate the study. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.
Data Access and Retention
Where appropriate, authors may be required to provide the data or sources underlying their research for editorial review and, where feasible, to make such materials publicly available or retain them for a reasonable period following publication.
Originality and Plagiarism
Authors must ensure that they have produced entirely original work and that all sources and works used have been appropriately cited.
Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication
Authors should not submit manuscripts describing substantially the same research to more than one journal simultaneously. Concurrent submission of the same manuscript to multiple journals constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.
Acknowledgement of Sources
Authors must always provide appropriate acknowledgment of the work of others and cite all sources and contributions referred to in the manuscript.
Authorship
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research reported in the manuscript. All individuals who have made substantial contributions should be listed as co-authors.
Contributors who have participated in certain aspects of the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship should be appropriately acknowledged.
In the case of jointly authored manuscripts, the corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors have been properly identified, have approved the final version of the manuscript, and have agreed to its submission for publication.
Conflicts of Interest and Disclosure
All authors should disclose any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that could be perceived as influencing the results or interpretation of their work. Sources of financial support for the research and/or the project from which the article derives should also be acknowledged.
Errors in Published Articles
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in a published article, they are expected to notify the editors promptly and cooperate in correcting or retracting the publication where necessary.
Publication Fees
Gli Argonauti does not charge authors any fees for manuscript submission, editorial processing, or publication.
Post-Publication Discussion
Gli Argonauti encourages the development, promotion, and institutionalization of scholarly debate following the publication of articles in the journal.
