The words of Julius Proculus, the man who announced the deification of Romulus to the Romans, are reported in significantly different ways by the sources that relate the episode. The article examines this tradition, which stretches from Livy to Byzantine literature, showing how from time to time the priorities indicated by the founder respond to the historical contexts and political situations of the era in which the episode is recounted.
