I due mirti di Quirino. L’identità vegetale di un dio romano

Secondo Plinio il Vecchio (15, 120-121), davanti al tempio di Quirino avevano a lungo fatto mostra di sé due esemplari di mirto, chiamati l’uno “patrizio” e l’altro “plebeo”. La loro alterna fioritura aveva seguito per secoli le fortune dei due ceti istituiti da Romolo; infine, il mirto patrizio era definitivamente appassito, in coincidenza con la perdita di prestigio e potere del Senato dopo la guerra sociale. L’articolo esplora questa pagina da due punti di vista. In primo luogo, la notizia pliniana viene connessa al diffuso motivo culturale che fa dell’albero una sorta di identità esterna, che accompagna le sorti di un individuo, e talora di una famiglia o di un’intera collettività. In secondo luogo, essa è utilizzata per una migliore messa a fuoco dello sfuggente profilo di Quirino, divinità civica legata strettamente all’iniziativa politica del fondatore di Roma.
According to Pliny the Elder (15, 120-121), two myrtles had long been shown in front of the temple of Quirinus, one called “patrician” and the other “plebeian”. Their alternating flowering had followed for centuries the fortunes of the two classes established by Romulus; finally, the patrician myrtle had definitively withered, coinciding with the loss of prestige and power of the Senate after the social war. The article explores this page from two points of view. First, it is connected to the widespread cultural motif that makes the tree a sort of external identity, which accompanies the fate of an individual, and sometimes of a family or an entire community. Secondly, it is used to better focus on the elusive profile of Quirinus, a civic divinity closely linked to the political initiative of the founder of Rome.
