From 1796 onwards, all the conditions favorable to the success of a literary work that became the bearer of new patriotic ideals such as the Alfierian work were created in Italy: a success essentially aimed at the political contents of the tragedies and treaties. The great theatrical success of Alfieri and his corresponding political myth as a prophet of the imminent Risorgimento and the unity of Italy were born in the ‘Jacobin triennium’ and then extended to the entire Nineteenth century. The interpretation of Alfieri as a prophet of freedom and the unity of Italy is developed in particular by De Sanctis. The essay reconstructs the development of this interpretation of the figure and work of Alfieri.
