Noi e gli altri: guerra, pace, alterità nel Directorium ad passagium faciendum

Abstract

Il presente contributo si concentra sull’analisi del Directorium ad passagium faciendum, un progetto di crociata indirizzato da un anonimo predicatore francese a Filippo VI di Valois (1293-1350), re di Francia. L’opera, composta nel 1332, appartiene al genere De recuperatione Terre Sancte, ma si apre anche alla letteratura odeporica. Oltre a testimoniare i rapporti tra Occidente, Oriente e Islam, e il clima nella corte francese alla vigilia della Guerra dei Cent’anni, il Directorium fornisce un interessante caso di studio per la percezione dei concetti di pace, guerra e alterità nel Basso Medioevo. Nella prima parte dell’articolo, si indagheranno le strategie letterarie, narrative e retoriche adottate dall’autore per rappresentare l’alterità e, in controluce, l’appartenenza identitaria nelle sezioni che trattano l’ideologia della guerra, con un focus particolare sugli aspetti lessi cali. Nella seconda parte, l’attenzione sarà rivolta alle medesime strategie, applicate però alla riflessione sulla pace, e messe a confronto con altre opere del genere.

This contribution focuses on the analysis of the Directorium ad passagium faciendum, a crusade project addressed by an anonymous French preacher to Philip VI of Valois (1293-1350), King of France. The work, written in 1332, belongs to the genre De recuperatione Terre Sancte, but it also extends to travel literature. In addition to documenting the relationships between the West, the East and Islam, as well as the atmosphere at the French court on the eve of the Hundred Years’ War, the Directorium provides an interesting case study for the perception of the concepts of peace, war, and otherness in the Late Middle Ages. The first part of the article investigates the literary, narrative, and rhetorical strategies adopted by the author to represent Otherness and, implicitly, Identity in the sections that address the ideology of war, with a particular focus on lex­ical aspects. The second part focuses on the same strategies, applied, however, to reflec­tions on peace, and compared with other works of the genre.
