Abstract

The aim of this paper is to make a comparison between the opinions expressed by Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile concerning the controversial philosophy of Leonardo da Vinci. While Croce - in opposition to positivism and to the myth that considers Leonardo as a precursor of modern naturalism -  does not recognize a philosophical dimension to the Tuscan genius, on the other hand, Gentile – committed to reconstructing the development of the Italian thought and tracing its originality - sees in Leonardo a precursor of many of those theories that will animate the subsequent story of philosophy. Nevertheless, both solutions converge in the centrality of the Italian tradition.
