Imaginaries of the environmental emergency in Taranto: the visual mediation of the effects of pollution between local artist engagement and movements for environmental justice.
Building on Gilbert Durand's (1991) contribution to general archetypology, this essay aims to analyze some visual representations derived from local public/artist engagement in the case of the former ILVA steel plant in Taranto. The starting point is the notion that breathing is the bodily reflex that contributes to shaping, more than others, the structure of the ecological imaginary of movements for environmental justice. Drawing upon certain formulations from the Russian reflexology school, Durand distinguishes three dominant reflexes as matrixes of the compositional organization of human symbolization. We will thus postulate the existence of a fourth reflexive dominant: the respiratory dominant as the basis for the symbolic ontogenesis of the iconography of Taranto's eco-activism. Here, the osmotic relationship between respiratory function and perceptual experience in a highly toxic environment has emerged as a factory of symbols, archetypes, and signs that tend towards substantial dynamism and variability and towards a progressive integration with empirical elements
