This article is an excerpt of the book La società dei simulacri (The society of simulacra), in which the author has announced the crisis of a civilization which has denied itself.
The text has just been published again, thirty years later, in a new edition in Agalma (n. 20/21), the Journal of Cultural Studies and Aesthetics that he founded.
