Lights in the shadow: women writers in their attic between creation and resistance
Starting from sociological studies of Bachelard and Durand about the shadow, the aim of this article is to re-read the works of some twentieth-century women writers that worked in the silence of their solitude, in the narrow space of their attics, promoting social change.
This article aims at a different analysis of the writing space of new authors, building on Gilbert and Gubar’s insights: the examples of Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath and the Austrian Marlen Haushofer.
Moreover, taking up bell hooks' reflections on the praise of the margin, the shadow is explored as a site of cultural production where silenced voices found expression and visibility. The intent is re-reading the role of intimate spaces in the light of feminist movements: as a place of resistance and creativity.
The attics and private rooms of women writers become laboratories of literary and social innovation, despite the interference of patriarchal social norms and expectations.
